IKEJA

Ikeja: The Heart of Lagos State

Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State, Nigeria, is a pivotal urban center situated about 17 kilometers northwest of Lagos city. Originally an agricultural area known for kola nut cultivation, Ikeja transformed into a residential and industrial suburb with the opening of the Lagos-Ibadan railway in 1901. By the mid-20th century, Ikeja had established itself as an industrial hub, home to numerous factories and manufacturing industries.

Designated as the capital of Lagos State in 1976, Ikeja is now the administrative center, housing the Lagos State Secretariat and various government offices. The town also serves as a major commercial district with a bustling array of businesses, financial institutions, and shopping centers. Murtala Muhammed International Airport, located within Ikeja, enhances its role as a key transportation and trade gateway.

Ikeja’s significance extends beyond its economic and administrative functions. It is a vibrant cultural and recreational hub with parks, museums, and cultural centers. Recent infrastructure developments have bolstered its growth, making Ikeja a model of urban planning and an essential component of Lagos State’s dynamic landscape.
